15 Best Pizza Places in Houston, Texas (2023)
Houston is known for many things! Its humid weather, oil refineries, and…pizza?
That’s right, Houston has a thriving pizza scene with some of the best pizzerias in the country. Whether you’re a traditionalist who loves a classic New York-style slice or you’re looking for something more experimental, we have rounded up the best pizza places in Houston.
1. The Gypsy Poet
- Address: 2404 Austin St, Houston, TX
- Phone: (281) 888-8663
One of the best places to get handmade wood-fired pizza also features live poetry readings, open mic nights, and outdoor seating. It’s best to wash down the food with a Saint Arnold brew or a light Italian lager. They also have a changing selection of low-priced wines by the glass and bottle. The Gypsy Poet is a great location to chill out with its greenery-lined terrace, board games, bookshelves, movie projector, and trendy leather couch.
Vanessa Fernandez, a Venezuelan-born pastry chef, is the co-owner and is known as “the Pizza Queen.” Her sourdough crusts, fermented for 48 to 72 hours, are super-thin, bouncy, and robust enough to hold a lot of toppings. Fernandez’s pizzas are similar to traditional Neapolitan pies in that they use San Marzano fior di latte, tomato sauce, plus other high-quality ingredients. Nonetheless, the sauce is tangier, and she adds more cheese, both of which are reminiscent of the traditional New York version. She earns the best pizza in Houston title, hands down!

2. Tiny Champions
- Address: 2617 McKinney St, Houston, Texas
- Phone: (713) 485-5329
A bohemian restaurant serving homestyle Italian cooking with cocktails, beer & natural wine. One customer says he can’t give it enough stars, while another said it’s friendly, clean, and neat. However, one review that stands out, which we can relate to, says: “Where can I find delicious vegetarian pizzas and appetizers? Fortunately, you have found the correct place. We planned a special weekend supper and made reservations.” Seating is available both inside and on the patio outside.
Freshly baked zaatar bread complemented the creamy burrata perfectly. They offer both kale & summer corn pizzas, with both being accompanied by chili cream sauces that were simply out of this world. The combination of the chili cream sauce and the bread would make a fantastic starter. The pasta is excellent as well. After dinner, dig into the ice cream cake.
That about sums up this pizzeria, which is one of the best pizza places in Houston.

8. Tony’s New York Pizza
- Address: 10511 Jones Rd #B, Houston, Texas
- Phone: (281) 469-4106
The modest setting, good service, friendly staff, fresh mozzarella, great dough, the best pizza in town, and a real pizza oven are just some of the phrases that customers use to describe their experience here. New Yorkers feel right at home. Antonio Portillo relocated to Houston in 2005 and founded Tony’s New York Pizza along Jones Road and subsequently on Louetta Road in 2009 after refining his pizza-making skills for years in New York.
Pictures of the New York cityscape and sports memorabilia on display are just a few ways that Portillo pays tribute to the restaurant’s home city. Be on the lookout for the day’s deals. Jamaican pork pies, for example, are a nod to Portillo’s New York City eatery. The rice balls, which are stuffed with ground beef and cheese, are another special item. Aside from pizza, you may have calzones, salad, pasta, wings, and pizza by the slice or the whole.
